Feature Article: Name That Shifter: 1971 AMC Javelin - from Car & Driver

Name That Shifter 83
Shifter No. 83
On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. Our 4th of July mystery car couldn’t be more American, folks—the first commenter to correctly identify it as a 1971 AMC Javelin was R88Colvin. (That’s “American Motors Corporation” to you kids out there.) He will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.

The Javelin pictured here is from our October 1970 issue. It was refreshed for the ’71 model year with more-expressive styling and upgraded engines. The base motivator was a 135-hp six-cylinder, but a 401-cubic-inch V-8 making 330 hp was available with the sporty AMX model. At the time, we described the Javelin as “a car of undeniable appeal” that would be embraced by those committed to defending underdogs. Come to think of it, that concept sounds pretty darn America.
