Thanks to SpeedHut and Florida 5.0, you can give your AMC modern electronic GPS driven gauges. My 1974 AMC Javelin AMX needed re-wiring (too many electrical gremlins even though the mice never got too them). The wiring was brittle and could not be stripped. After going with the American Auto Highway Series 22 wiring kit PLUS a new M&H rear taillamp harness, the wiring was not going to match up very easily to the factory gauges. And, I wanted a Powermaster 140 amp alternator to replace the Motorola 55 amp alternator and I didn't want all that power going through 1 wire to the ampmeter - a fire hazzard). So, I looked high and low for custom gauges. I stumbled upon SpeedHut. The Utah based company is linked to Autometer (the owner is the son of the owner of Autometer). They handle all of the custom gauge work for Autometer. They offer precision, electronic GPS driven gauges AND they are fully customizable (you get to pick the color of the face, letters/numbers, back lighting and can even add your own custom logos!). I wanted my gauges to look as close as stock as possible (except a 200MPH speedometer in place of the 140MPH unit) and custom logos.
The factory gauge cluster was modified by Russ Reidy at Florida 5.0. He's a long time friend and has been going custom Mustang gauge clusters for over 20 years. They can also offer you any Autometer gauge at competitive pricing too! They are currently evaluating whether or not to offer custom AMC gauge clusters that fit aftermarket gauges like these. For now, they can modify your factory gauge cluster (as they did mine) for a perfect, OEM fit.
4" GPS Driven 200 MPH Speedometer w/Turn Signals & High Beam (no speedometer cable required - uses satellite for calibration)
NOTE: Revolution black bezels, Swis font, black dial / white font, reverse lime green backlighting, red pointer are as close to factory AMC as you can get. Custom logos should be available from SpeedHut.com or you can contact NTAMC for high resolution AMC logos.
My recommendations:
- Modify your factory gas tank for a modern electronic sending unit. Speed Hut offers one with their gauges (the factory unit is non-electronic and just not anywhere near accurate). This will require welding of your fuel tank (I recommend using a Gas Tank Re-Nu dealer for this).
- Use orange (instead of red) for the gauge red line on Speedometer and Tach). Red won't light up at night but orange will.
- Use the GPS WITH the turn signals and high beam integrated into the speedometer. Why? Reproduction dash harnesses from M&H DO NOT include new wiring for the turn signals or high beam which can still cause electrical gremlins with 40 year old + wiring. Don't take chances and just go with the integrated turn signal and high beam lights in the speedometer.
- Be prepared to wait 6-8 weeks (minimum) to receive your gauges (if customized like mine) and to send off your cluster to be modified with the new gauges and receive them back). If you can wait, you'll have a custom, precision set of gauges like no other.
